In Ayurveda, Osteoarthritis is known as Sandhigata Vata. It occurs when Vata dosha becomes aggravated and localizes in the joints (Sandhi), leading to the depletion of synovial fluid (Shleshaka Kapha) and degeneration of cartilage.
Symptoms of Sandhigata Vata:
- Pain during movement
- Swelling and stiffness in the joints
- Crepitus (cracking sounds) when bending the knees
Ayurvedic Management:
The Ayurvedic approach to treating Sandhigata Vata focuses on pacifying Vata dosha and nourishing the joints. This is achieved through:
- Abhyanga (Oil Massage): Regular massage with warm medicated oils like Mahanarayana Taila to lubricate the joints and reduce stiffness.
- Swedana (Fomentation): Herbal steam therapy to improve circulation and relieve pain.
- Basti (Enema Therapy): Considered the best treatment for Vata disorders, medicated enemas help eliminate toxins and balance Vata.
- Diet and Lifestyle: A Vata-pacifying diet rich in warm, nourishing, and easily digestible foods, along with gentle exercises like yoga.
